BCI and the SDGs

BCI and the SDGs

American Sea Island Cotton
has obtained BCI certification to prove sustainable cotton cultivation.

BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) is an effort to increase the sustainability and betterment of cotton cultivation, advocated by international NGO organizations based in Geneva and London and is now expanding to become global activities.

On the other hand, the SDGs consist of 17 goals and 169 targets under the United Nations's Sustainable Development Goals as an international goal to 2030, and pledges to "leave no one beind."

BCI's challenges are consistent with the Goals of the SDGs and its 10 divisions, and their efforts are becoming increasingly important.

American Sea Island Cotton contract growers are BCI certified and comply with standards such as restrictions on pesticide and water use, fiber quality, health and safety considerations, working environment, and prohibition of child labor and forced labor.

In addition to realizing the highest quality, we also realize cotton cultivation that is friendly to the global environment and social environment.

Goals

Goals of the SDGs and BCI Goals

  • SDGs Goals

Put an end to all forms of poverty everywhere.

    BCI Goals

BCI aims to reduce pesticide input, increase biodiversity, use land responsibly, improve the quality and yield of cotton fibers, and improve sustainable agriculture and profitability.

  • SDGs Goals

Put an end to hunger, achieve food stability, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

    BCI Goals

BCI recognizes that food farming is the main focus of SDG 2, but sustainable agricultural practices are also closely related to non-edible crops. Better Cotton's principles and standards are strongly aligned with the Goals of SDG 2, helping cotton farmers implement sustainable agriculture to increase yield and productivity and increase biodiversity.

  • SDGs Goals

Ensure a healthy life for everyone of all ages and promote welfare.

    BCI Goals

BCI is working with partners to help cotton farmers reduce and eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals in cotton production. We aim to deepen our knowledge of safe agriculture, such as the adoption of alternative methods for crop protection, such as integrated pest control, and the use of personal protective equipment, and to address the use of chemicals and water and soil contamination.

  • SDGs Goals

Provideinclusive, fair and quality education to all and promote lifelong learning machines.

    BCI Goals

BCI promotes training and capacity development of cotton farmers around the world Through the BCI program, farmers receive education and training on agricultural best practices that address social, environmental and economic factors. During the 2016-17 cotton season, BCI and its operations partners trained 1.6 million cotton farmers in 23 countries. BCI also encourages the sharing and learning of knowledge across countries.

  • SDGs Goals

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

    BCI Goals

Gender discrimination is one of the biggest workplace equality challenges in cotton farming. The Better Cotton standard provides a clear position in gender equality. This is consistent with the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Gender-Related Decent Work Agenda requirements.

  • SDGs Goals

Ensure access to water and sanitation and sustainable management for everyone.

    BCI Goals

Better Cotton's principles and standards are committed to the sustainable use of water through water management. Water management means the use of water in a socially fair, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial way. BCI has partnered with Helvetas (Poverty Support NGO) and Alliance for Water Stewardship to develop and deploy water stewardship practices.

  • SDGs Goals

Promote sustainable, comprehensive and sustainable economic growth for all, productive full employment and decent work.

    BCI Goals

BCI works with partners to address the risks of child labor, prevent it, and promote proper work in cotton cultivation. The Better Cotton principle also works with farmers and focuses on the rights for education, health, and better growth of children in line with the International Labour Organization's Convention on Child Labor.

  • SDGs Goals

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

    BCI Goals

BCI has worked with about 100 retailers and brand members to integrate Better Cotton into its sustainable raw materials strategy to ensure global demand. BCI's demand-driven funding model means that the cotton procurement of retailers and brands as Better Cotton will directly lead to increased investment in cotton farmer's training on more sustainable agriculture.

  • SDGs Goals

Take emergency measures to combat climate change and its effects.

    BCI Goals

Cotton farmers may be affected locally by the complexity of climate change. Climate change mitigation and adaptation are built into Better Cotton's principles and standards, and BCI’s implementation partners work with farmers to strengthen and sustainably manage biodiversity essential for addressing climate change.

  • SDGs Goals

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, deal with desertification, prevent and reverse land degradation, and prevent biodiversity loss.

    BCI Goals

BCI's approach to biodiversity focuses on identifying, mapping, repairing, or protecting natural resources. BCI farmers need to adopt biodiversity management plans to protect and strengthen biodiversity in and around the farm, which includes identifying and mapping biodiversity resources, identifying and restoring degraded areas, strengthening the number of beneficial insect populations, It includes securing wheelwork and protecting the riverbank area.
